As the school term ends and the warm weather sets in, many parents find themselves asking the same question: how do I keep my child active and engaged through the summer holidays? The good news? Football is one of the easiest ways to keep kids moving, learning, and having fun. At NexAim Football, based in North Kensington, we understand the value of building a football routine even outside formal sessions. Here are 7 engaging and simple football activities perfect for children as little as 5 years old.

  1. Dribbling Obstacle Course

Set up cones (or something similar) in a zig-zag pattern and have your child weave through them using both feet. This builds close ball control and balance.

Coach Tip: Time them and try to beat the score. Make it a challenge!

  1. The 1-Minute Keepy-Uppy Challenge

Great for developing touch and focus. If they're beginners, allow bounces.

Goal: Improves first touch, coordination, and concentration.

  1. Pass-and-Move Partner Drill

Using a parent, sibling or wall, they pass the ball and move to receive again. Add two-touch or one-touch variations. Try and use the inside of the foot when passing the ball.

Skill Area: Passing accuracy, positioning, anticipation.

  1. Match the Pro

Watch a 5-minute clip of a favourite player (like Saka or Foden), then imitate their skill moves. YouTube is full of highlights!

Result: Encourages creativity and tactical thinking.

  1. Penalty Shootout Fun

Simple but effective. Vary angles and challenges—non-dominant foot only, trick shots, sudden death.

Use in small spaces: A portable pop-up goal or even bins can work.

Why It Matters

According to the NHS Physical Activity Guidelines, children should engage in at least 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous activity per day across the week (NHS, 2023). Structured games like these not only meet that target—they also boost mental wellbeing, reduce screen time, and prepare young players for the upcoming term.
